Nacido el 17 de julio de 1935 en Saint John, New Brunswick, Canadá, Donald Sutherland acumuló unos 200 créditos cinematográficos y televisivos a lo largo de más de 60 años.
Sutherland ganó un Globo de Oro por la película para televisión Path to War, un premio Emmy y un Globo de Oro por su actuación en la miniserie Citizen X.
Al fallecido actor le sobreviven su esposa Francine Racette; hijos Roeg, Rossif, Angus, Kiefer y Raquel; y cuatro nietos.
